Unalaq believed that the separation between the Spirit World and the Physical World was unnatural. He argued that the portals should remain permanently open, allowing spirits to walk freely among humans. This ideology put him at odds with Tenzin and the Air Nation, who feared the consequences of such a merger on human safety and order. His obsession grew following the death of his sister, Senna, whom he felt could have been saved had spiritual energy been more accessible. During Harmonic Convergence, Unalaq manipulated events to ensure the dark spirit Vaatu would be reborn stronger than Raava. He sought to become a new Avatar of Darkness, believing that true balance required equal power for light and shadow. Tragically, his plan backfired. Instead of controlling the darkness, he became consumed by it. His attempt to absorb Vaatu resulted in him losing his humanity entirely, turning him into a monstrous entity before his final defeat.

The wind howled through the Spirit Wilds, carrying whispers that only Unalaq could hear. He stood at the edge of the glowing portal, his staff planted firmly in the earth as blue energy crackled around his hands. The air smelled of ozone and ancient magic. He closed his eyes, feeling the pulse of Vaatu within him, growing stronger with every passing second. 'Soon,' he whispered to the empty darkness, 'the balance will be true.' But as he reached for the shadow, a bright light pierced the gloom, revealing that some debts could not be paid with sacrifice alone.

This leads him to ally with the ancient dark spirit Vaatu during Harmonic Convergence, believing darkness was necessary for true balance. Ultimately, Unalaq attempts to become the Avatar of Darkness by absorbing Vaatu into himself. His plan fails when Korra and Jinora intervene using spiritual energy to sever his connection. He is consumed by his own actions, dissolving into spirit light as a consequence of merging with the darkness he sought to control, leaving his legacy tarnished in Southern history.
