Suyin Beifong
The matriarch of Zaofu who found peace after a childhood of rivalry.
Suyin Beifong is Lin Beifong's half-sister and the matriarch of Zaofu. Her strained relationship with Lin stemmed from their childhood, where Toph gave them significant freedom that led both to fight for attention: Lin became a police officer while Suyin became a delinquent. A flashback reveals Lin once caught Suyin hanging out with thieves, leading to an accidental scarring of Lin and a rift between the sisters and their mother. Toph was forced to tear up Lin's arrest report to keep Suyin from jail, causing further tension. Lore & Background
Suyin's history is defined by her conflict with her half-sister Lin. During their youth, Toph gave them lots of freedom due to her own strict upbringing, which caused the sisters to believe they were being ignored and to fight for their mother's attention. This dynamic pushed Lin toward a career in law enforcement while Suyin became a delinquent. The tension peaked when Lin caught Suyin with thieves; an ensuing struggle left Lin scarred. Their mother, Toph, intervened by tearing up the arrest report to prevent Suyin from going to jail, a decision that dismayed Lin and deepened the rift among the three. Years later, during Book Three: Change (2014), Suyin revealed she had changed her ways and made peace with Toph. She explained this history to Korra, noting how their childhood dynamic shaped them into who they were.
In Their Own Story
In Book Three: Change (2014), Lin traveled to Zaofu searching for a new airbender but remained on the ship initially. When her presence was detected by the truth-seer Aiwei, Suyin met her there and revealed she was Lin's sister, prompting Lin to correct her that they were only half-sisters. At dinner, Lin made snide remarks to Suyin until an argument escalated, interrupted briefly by Varrick. Later, Opal visited Lin in her room to reconcile, asking for her to be part of the family, but Lin coldly told her to "get out," causing Opal to run away in tears. Korra then angrily told Lin she would always be a lonely and bitter woman before storming out. The next morning, Lin followed Aiwei's advice to visit an acupuncturist, where she revisited memories of her attempt to arrest Suyin and the accidental scarring. Upon waking, Lin disregarded rest to confront Suyin again. After Suyin claimed Tenzin was right to leave Lin for being selfish, Lin attacked, sparking a full-blown fracas between the siblings. Opal broke up the fight by asking why sisters would want to hurt each other, causing Lin to pass out from exhaustion and sleep for sixteen hours.
