Lore & Background
According to ancient history, the worlds were once united until Avatar Wan intervened during a battle with the dark spirit Vaatu. To prevent eternal conflict, Wan used the power of the four elements combined with Raava's energy to close the natural gateways that already existed, separating the realms. The portals remained closed until the era of Avatar Korra, when the Northern Water Tribe Chief Unalaq reopened them. The conflict culminated in a battle over the fate of these gateways during the next Harmonic Convergence cycle. Ultimately, Avatar Korra merged with Raava and, with help from Jinora, defeated Vaatu—whose essence was trapped within Raava and will regrow over 10,000 years—and chose to leave both portals open to allow spirits and humans to coexist. This decision allowed for peaceful coexistence rather than separation, though it required humans to be more mindful of their environment. Spirit vines began growing in Republic City, signaling a new era where nature and industry had to find balance.
