Vaatu is the primordial Spirit of Darkness and the personification of chaos within the spiritual realm. As the eternal counterpart to Raava, the Spirit of Light, Vaatu represents destruction and disorder that threatens the balance between the physical and spirit worlds. He serves as the central antagonist of the first season of The Legend of Korra, seeking to destroy Raava and end the cycle of Avatar reincarnation forever. For thousands of years, Vaatu was sealed away by the first Avatar, Wan, to prevent his return during Harmonic Convergence. However, his influence persisted through dark spirits and ambitious humans who sought to harness his power for political or spiritual gain.

Lore & Background
At the dawn of time, Vaatu and Raava were created as opposing forces. While Raava embodied order and light, Vaatu represented chaos and destruction. They engaged in an eternal struggle that defined the spiritual landscape until Wan intervened. During a Harmonic Convergence thousands of years prior to the series, Wan merged with Raava to become the first Avatar, subsequently trapping Vaatu within the Tree of Time in the Spirit World. Vaatu remained imprisoned for millennia, but his spirit leaked into the physical world as dark spirits during periods of spiritual imbalance. In modern history, Unalaq sought to free him, believing that a world without Avatars would return to a state where humans and spirits could coexist without separation. The final confrontation occurred within the spiritual realm inside Korra herself. After Raava was critically wounded by Vaatu, she transferred her essence into Korra to survive. Empowered by Avatar energy, Raava fought back from within, ultimately destroying Vaatu and ending his threat permanently.
